The Neighbour Hooligans learn about cars, tyres and the ways of tradesmen
On our first official mini trip with all of us in the car we headed to Manie’s Autoshop to get the first glimpse of our car. What a beauty. Our Volvo V40 Station Wagon that we have not named… yet, was not yet in tip top shape. But the first order of business was to find out whether the car could actually make the trip. Manie reassured us that unless we really screw up we should make it home safe.
So, after the obligatory peek under the hood to learn where everything was and where to put the water, oil, brake fluid and how to measure each of them, (all fun and games for now) Manie regaled us with a tale of a long camping trip with a leaking water tank in his car. First in went the water, then the beer and then the brannewyn. Tragedy. We could see a tear start to glisten in his eye as he came to the end of his tale. But all ended well. The car got home and didn’t die an a haze of vaporized alcohol.
So we now know that any fluid will work if your car runs out of water. To be truthful it will probably be the drinking water before the Hunter’s Dry.
On to the main event, the tyres. Imagine our surprise when Manie decides to demonstrate on one of ours and promptly punctures it with a screwdriver.
Our faces = :o.
He then proceeded to show us how to fix a puncture permanently with some corkscrews and something that looks like mini salami. Ten minutes later the tyre is as good as new and the Hooligans share a look of relief. Sarah and the tyre puncturer |

Karselle and the dip stick |
Upon the conclusion of the lesson Manie proceeds to give us some advice on how to deal with the macho men in the auto repair industry. Look pretty, ask questions and never let them catch in that you might know more than them. And if they are doing it wrong tell them you have no money. Works every time.
Thank you to Manie and his auto repair shop for getting our vehicle in such tip top shape, all the lessons and the tyre repair kit.

The Hooligans learn to read maps...
While trekking through 7 countries in 17 days for the rally, the Hooligans have decided it might be a good idea to invest in some maps and a few guide books.
Route planning is well under way, but now we just need to tweak the map reading skills while driving in a car (cue motion sickness tablets).
Google maps has also been very useful with distances and places, however one does get quite worried when Google maps says: arriving at unknown road for a destination.
Awesome stuff!

The Hooligans get shots
No, this isn't the type of shots we were hoping for. Rather, the Hooligans have gotten injections.
With only 34 days left and the ball starting to really roll, all the Neighbour Hooligans have gotten their yellow fever shots. All we can say is EINA- arms are a little more sore than usual, but we are all good.
While yellow fever is compulsory- we are travelling to Zambia and need it to enter back into the country (South Africa), some of us have gone the cautious root and gotten tetanus as well... With all the rusty nails we may encounter, one can never be too careful.
Keep it cool

The Hooligans ask some questions...
The Neighbour Hooligans Pub Quiz last Wednesday was a great success. After all the blood, sweat, toil and worry we pulled off a last minute venue change and a few question changes to start this fantastic evening. The Hooligans were amazed by people’s generosity and competitiveness (we were selling clues) which allowed us to raise over R5500 for Project Rhino and the Put Foot Foundation. (We were also amazed that everyone still knew the moves to the Macarena).
A few thank you’s are in order.
Firstly we want to thank everyone who came to the quiz and who were so generous. Secondly our Quizmaster, Matt “Fish” Murgatroyd did a fantastic job at entertaining our guests and so we thank him for that. Thank you to Europa at the Canterbury Crossing shopping centre for staying open to accommodate us and for their attentive waitrons. Thank you to all the people who donated prized for the night; Elna McIntoshe, Casalotti’s Pizza, Gail Holgate, Dave Haselau, Moyo’s at Zoo Lake, Paddy’s, Thymes and Tings, Mexican Fresh and Parkview Golf course and Proshop.
We want to thank the Emmarentia Meshy Course for their generous donation on our behalf.
We also want to congratulate all the teams for their performances, especially the three winning teams.
Until next time....
